seal your doors and windows from the cold with good to go maintenance in long island ny

Now that summer is on its way out and the weather is getting cooler, you’re noticing a bit of a draft coming from the trim around your front door.

That’s no good.

Considering how bad the draft is, you worry that there may be other drafts coming through cracks in your windows and doors that you don’t notice.

Making sure any seams around doors and windows are sealed is an important step in controlling your home’s temperature, saving on energy costs, and keeping pests out. If your windows and doors aren’t properly sealed, it may be time to call a general contractor in Long Island, NY.

Checking for Drafts

keep out the cold draft this winter with a general contractor in long island ny

If you suspect there may be air getting through your trim work, but you can’t tell for sure, here are two ways you can check. Make sure you try this on a windy day for a better chance of detecting a draft.

  • Candle Test – This is a pretty straightforward test. It not only can let you know if you have air coming through, but it can also help you pin-point where it’s coming from. Just hold the candle as still as you can near the seam of the window. Move it around the different parts of the window to see if the flame is disturbed. If the flame moves, then there’s a draft, and the direction the flame is moving indicates the direction of the draft.
  • Curtain Test – You may already have curtains hanging on the window you’re wanting to test. Otherwise, you’ll want to rig up a temporary curtain rod or wardrobe rack. Remember to close any windows and doors and turn off any fans that may stir up the air. Then simply watch the curtains to see if they move. You may see them pushed out or sucked in, which means you certainly have a draft.

Reasons to Keep Out the Draft

  • Temperature – First things first. Your home is primarily a shelter. It may not be a huge deal during autumn, but as the winter chill sets in, warmth will be less about mere comfort and more about survival. Especially if you have children and pets in your home, you’ll want to be sure to keep your house cozy.
  • Energy Costs – The more of a draft you have coming in, the more energy is being used trying to heat your home. Making sure to seal any gaps or cracks and replacing inefficient or broken windows and doors is a great way to reduce energy costs while keeping your home warm in the winter and cool during the summer.
  • Pests – If air is getting through your windows and doors, you can be sure that pests are not far behind—if they aren’t already in your home. There are plenty of different types of pests that can easily find these gaps and squeeze on in. Some of these pests, like ants, can spread disease as they wander around in walls and get into your food. And other pests, like termites, can wreak havoc on your home itself, causing thousands of dollars in damage before you even realize they’re there.
